Outdated Separation Anxiety Dog Training Methods to Abandon in 2024

If you're struggling to make progress with your dog's Separation Anxiety, it might be because you're following one of these outdated training practices. Keep reading to discover the popular methods we need to abandon in 2024, and what you should be doing instead.

The 'Cry it Out' Method

This technique is still widely practised and recommended, but does more harm than good. Leaving a puppy or dog to cry it out whilst alone will only confirm to them that being alone is scary and they won't be able to 'get used to it'. Not only will this prevent you from making progress, the stress this causes for your dog can be harmful.

Instead of letting your dog 'cry it out', work out what level of alone time your dog is totally comfortable with now and start building up the time slowly from here.

Leaving Food When You Leave

Food and Separation Anxiety training just don't mix. Your dog will likely be too anxious to eat when you have left, and if even they do have an appetite the food will only temporarily distract them or mask their symptoms. When the food runs out, your dog's panic will set in. Even the best food toys will only last for so long.

Stop relying on food as a distraction. Practice departures when your dog is fully aware, but at a level they are comfortable with.

Crating Your Dog When Alone

This practice is most often recommended for dogs who are destructive or toilet when home alone. But the reason your dog is doing this, is because they are scared. Crating doesn't change how your dog feels about being alone, it only contains (and often adds to) their panic.

The majority of dogs with Separation Anxiety do better with more space, not less. Crating should be the exception, not the rule, for these dogs.
